NÓD
GLAS
Innovation with Impact.
A lightweight, self-hosted community technology project exploring privacy, resilience, digital sovereignty and sustainable computing — one node at a time.
GLAS
NODE 01
Building resilient
community networks.
Nód Glas investigates whether modern digital communities can be built using lightweight infrastructure, open technologies and community ownership rather than dependency on massive centralised platforms.
The project began with a simple question: how much infrastructure do we actually need to build useful online communities?
Nód Glas explores a different approach — software designed to remain understandable, efficient and deployable on modest hardware while giving communities greater control over their own systems and data.
The long-term vision is a network of independently operated nodes which can communicate with one another voluntarily while remaining locally owned and managed.
Digital sovereignty
Communities should be able to host themselves, retain ownership of their data, moderate their own spaces and collaborate without surrendering control to a central authority.
Complexity only when necessary
Every component should remain understandable. Complexity is introduced only where it provides a meaningful technical or community benefit.
Five principles.
SDG Community BBS
Node 01 is the first working prototype within the Nód Glas project — a lightweight community bulletin board designed around local communication and sustainable computing.
SDG Community BBS
Inspired by the focused community communication of traditional Bulletin Board Systems, Node 01 provides a simple platform for sharing community needs, ideas, resources and sustainability-related information.
The current implementation includes a Flask application, SQLite database, community messaging, SDG categorisation, search, analytics, password-protected posting, administrative controls and responsive design.
What Node 01 can do.
Community Messaging
Lightweight community posting and message presentation through the Node 01 interface.
SDG Categorisation
Community content can be associated with Sustainable Development Goals.
Search
Lightweight search functionality for navigating community information.
Analytics
Node-level analytics provide an overview of activity across SDG categories.
Access Control
Password-protected posting and administrative controls are incorporated into the prototype.
Responsive Design
The interface is designed to remain usable across desktop and mobile environments.
Built to be understood.
Nód Glas deliberately uses accessible technologies so the underlying system can be understood, modified, deployed and maintained without unnecessary abstraction.

From user to node.
The current Nód Glas architecture is designed around a lightweight application stack with the potential to evolve toward independently operated community nodes.
Technology with a wider purpose.
Nód Glas is not simply a software exercise. The project deliberately explores how software architecture, hardware reuse, community ownership and efficient computing can contribute toward broader sustainability objectives.

Trusted nodes may communicate voluntarily while retaining local ownership and autonomy.
Building resilient digital communities, one node at a time.
Nód Glas is an evolving technical project exploring sustainable computing, self-hosted infrastructure, privacy-conscious software and community-owned digital systems.
Technology should serve
the community – not control it.
Nód Glas explores an alternative approach to digital infrastructure: technology that is accessible, understandable, resilient and designed around local ownership.
The project is built around four core principles.
Privacy
Digital systems should minimise unnecessary data collection and give people greater control over the information they generate.
DATA • CONTROL • TRUSTDigital Sovereignty
Infrastructure should remain understandable, auditable and under the control of the people and communities who operate it.
OWNERSHIP • AUTONOMY • OPENNESSResilience
Distributed and lightweight systems can provide alternatives to unnecessary dependence on large, centralised infrastructure.
DISTRIBUTED • MODULAR • ROBUSTSustainability
Technology does not always need more hardware. Nód Glas explores efficient software and practical reuse of existing infrastructure.
EFFICIENCY • REUSE • IMPACT
Simple technology.
Serious engineering.
Nód Glas is deliberately built from lightweight, understandable technologies rather than a large collection of unnecessary dependencies.
The objective is simple: understand the underlying system, build it properly, and keep it efficient.
Backend
The application layer powering the Nód Glas community platform.
Frontend
A lightweight interface designed around usability, responsiveness and efficiency.
Data Layer
Local data storage supporting community messages, categorisation and application logic.
Development
Development is focused on understanding each component before extending the system.
